アフリカの多くの地域では、性分業にそって生業活動が営まれています。それと同時に、外部のアクターとの関わりや政策的な影響を受けて、生業活動を基盤にして培ってきた技能や知識（ジェンダーを基盤にした在来知）をもとに、人々が新たな生業活動に取り組み始めてもいます。es projectでは、そのような事例をひとつひとつ検討することによって、従来の知識や技術が、コミュニティにとっての新たな活動へと結びつく過程を検討しています。
